Often, the best chance of recovery for a seriously ill child is to travel to a hospital that is far from home. For a child, not having a loved one nearby during a critical time is frightening and can slow recovery time. For caregivers, the emotional, physical and financial stress mounts quickly and takes a toll on the entire family. Our Houses and Lounges were built to alleviate some financial burdens and let families stay close to their child during a difficult and critical time. While there is a suggested donation of $25 per family per night, no family is ever turned away due to their inability to pay.
The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile bridges the gap between under-served children and local community agencies. It travels to locations that are lacking in pediatric resources or underutilizing existing ones. The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile is a state-of-the-art, fully equipped pediatric clinic on wheels. Designed from the ground up to meet the specific well-care and treatment needs of children, it is staffed by pediatricians, nurse practitioners, nurses, and medical assistants from Texas Children’s Hospitals.
JoyFULL Eats is our food program that provides nourishment for families who are supporting their seriously ill child. One meal in a hospital cafeteria costs around $12, and the average stay for our families is between 3-6 months. Food expenses quickly become a financial burden. Our meal and snack program provides nourishing and convenient food options for families at all four of our Houston locations. Having a home-cooked or delivered meal and access to snacks gives our families one less thing to worry about. Our goal is to provide at least one hot meal each day for our Ronald McDonald House families.
Memories and moments of togetherness are a crucial part of healing. Family activities are just one of the ways we do this. We provide weekly, monthly, and annual activities for the families staying at the House. From Graduation and Prom, to Halloween parties and movie nights – our goal is to bring as many smiles and laughter to our families as possible.
We invite groups from our community to host special activities for our families, such as game nights, scavenger hunts, dance parties, bingo, science experiments, craft nights, and more!
We understand that it’s not just the sick child who is impacted by a life-altering medical diagnosis. From parents to siblings, all members of our Ronald McDonald House families face a range of unexpected issues as they cope with the medical crisis. Our Family Support Specialists engage community partnerships so we can provide wrap-around services to bridge gaps in areas like education, housing, emotional well-being, behavioral and therapeutic assistance, financial literacy and much more.
Ronald McDonald House Charities Greater Houston identifies, supports, and creates programs in the community that benefit child and family wellness. Current programs include enrichment areas inside hospitals and clinics, and hospitality carts that provide amenities and comfort to caregivers of hospitalized children.
We believe families are stronger when they battle a medical crisis together. With your help we can keep family members close to each other, and steps from their child’s medical treatment.
